The New Patriotic Party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has called on party members to set aside internal divisions and focus on rebuilding the party's base ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a regional delegates conference in Kumasi, Wontumi acknowledged that the party's defeat in the 2024 elections was a painful lesson that must not be repeated. "We lost because we were divided. We must learn from that and come together as one family," he said.

The conference, attended by constituency chairmen, executives, and polling station officers from across the region, adopted a new regional mobilisation strategy that includes monthly community outreach programmes and a youth recruitment drive targeting first-time voters.

The party's national leadership, represented by the General Secretary, urged the Ashanti Region — traditionally the NPP's stronghold — to lead the national recovery effort. "Ashanti is the heartbeat of this party. When Ashanti is strong, the NPP is strong," he said.

Several MPs from the region used the platform to call for a review of the party's flagbearer selection process, arguing that the current system disadvantages grassroots candidates. The national leadership promised to engage with these concerns at the upcoming national delegates conference.

The NDC, which won the 2024 elections, dismissed the NPP's unity calls as "political theatre," with the Ashanti Regional NDC Secretary saying the opposition party needed to focus on policy rather than internal politics.

Political analysts say the NPP's ability to resolve its internal tensions will be crucial to its prospects in 2028, particularly in swing regions where the party lost ground in the last election.
